The Overwhelming • 26 Ayahs

هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِ

Hal ataka hadeethu alghashiyat

Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَـٰشِعَةٌ

Wujoohun yawma-ithin khashiAAa

[Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled,

عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ

AAamilatun nasiba

Working [hard] and exhausted.¹

تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةً

Tasla naran hamiya

They will [enter to] burn in an intensely hot Fire.

تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍ

Tusqa min AAaynin aniya

They will be given drink from a boiling spring.

لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ

Laysa lahum taAAamun illamin dareeAA

For them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant

لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍ

La yusminu wala yughnee minjooAA

Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ

Wujoohun yawma-ithin naAAima

[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure.

لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ

LisaAAyiha radiya

With their effort [they are] satisfied

فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ

Fee jannatin AAaliya

In an elevated garden,

لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَـٰغِيَةً

La tasmaAAu feeha laghiya

Wherein they will hear no unsuitable speech.¹

فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ

Feeha AAaynun jariya

Within it is a flowing spring.

فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوعَةٌ

Feeha sururun marfooAAa

Within it are couches raised high

وَأَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوعَةٌ

Waakwabun mawdooAAa

And cups put in place

وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌ

Wanamariqu masfoofa

And cushions lined up

وَزَرَابِىُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ

Wazarabiyyu mabthootha

And carpets spread around.

أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ

Afala yanthuroona ilaal-ibili kayfa khuliqat

Then do they not look at the camels - how they are created?

وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ

Wa-ila assama-i kayfarufiAAat

And at the sky - how it is raised?

وَإِلَى ٱلْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ

Wa-ila aljibali kayfa nusibat

And at the mountains - how they are erected?

وَإِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ

Wa-ila al-ardi kayfa sutihat

And at the earth - how it is spread out?

فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ

Fathakkir innama anta muthakkir

So remind, [O Muḥammad]; you are only a reminder.

لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ

Lasta AAalayhim bimusaytir

You are not over them a controller.

إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ

Illa man tawalla wakafar

However, he who turns away and disbelieves

فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَكْبَرَ

FayuAAaththibuhu Allahu alAAathabaal-akbar

Then Allāh will punish him with the greatest punishment.

إِنَّ إِلَيْنَآ إِيَابَهُمْ

Inna ilayna iyabahum

Indeed, to Us is their return.

ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم

Thumma inna AAalayna hisabahum

Then indeed, upon Us is their account.
