طسٓمٓ

Ta-seen-meem

Ṭā, Seen, Meem.¹

تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ٱلْمُبِينِ

Tilka ayatu alkitabialmubeen

These are the verses of the clear Book.

لَعَلَّكَ بَـٰخِعٌ نَّفْسَكَ أَلَّا يَكُونُوا۟ مُؤْمِنِينَ

LaAAallaka bakhiAAun nafsaka allayakoonoo mu/mineen

Perhaps, [O Muḥammad], you would kill yourself with grief that they will not be believers.

إِن نَّشَأْ نُنَزِّلْ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ ءَايَةً فَظَلَّتْ أَعْنَـٰقُهُمْ لَهَا خَـٰضِعِينَ

In nasha/ nunazzil AAalayhim mina assama-iayatan fathallat aAAnaquhum lahakhadiAAeen

If We willed, We could send down to them from the sky a sign for which their necks would remain humbled.¹

وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن ذِكْرٍ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ مُحْدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنْهُ مُعْرِضِينَ

Wama ya/teehim min thikrin minaarrahmani muhdathin illa kanooAAanhu muAArideen

And no mention [i.e., revelation] comes to them anew from the Most Merciful except that they turn away from it.

فَقَدْ كَذَّبُوا۟ فَسَيَأْتِيهِمْ أَنۢبَـٰٓؤُا۟ مَا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

Faqad kaththaboo fasaya/teehim anbaoma kanoo bihi yastahzi-oon

For they have already denied, but there will come to them the news of that which they used to ridicule.

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَمْ أَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوْجٍ كَرِيمٍ

Awa lam yaraw ila al-ardi kamanbatna feeha min kulli zawjin kareem

Did they not look at the earth - how much We have produced therein from every noble kind?

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Inna fee thalika laayatan wamakana aktharuhum mu/mineen

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

وَإِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنِ ٱئْتِ ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

Wa-ith nada rabbukamoosa ani i/ti alqawma aththalimeen

And [mention] when your Lord called Moses, [saying], "Go to the wrongdoing people -

قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ أَلَا يَتَّقُونَ

Qawma firAAawna ala yattaqoon

The people of Pharaoh. Will they not fear Allāh?"

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ أَن يُكَذِّبُونِ

Qala rabbi innee akhafu anyukaththiboon

He said, "My Lord, indeed I fear that they will deny me

وَيَضِيقُ صَدْرِى وَلَا يَنطَلِقُ لِسَانِى فَأَرْسِلْ إِلَىٰ هَـٰرُونَ

Wayadeequ sadree walayantaliqu lisanee faarsil ila haroon

And that my breast will tighten and my tongue will not be fluent, so send for Aaron.

وَلَهُمْ عَلَىَّ ذَنۢبٌ فَأَخَافُ أَن يَقْتُلُونِ

Walahum AAalayya thanbun faakhafuan yaqtuloon

And they have upon me a [claim due to] sin, so I fear that they will kill me."

قَالَ كَلَّا ۖ فَٱذْهَبَا بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ ۖ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّسْتَمِعُونَ

Qala kalla fathhababi-ayatina inna maAAakum mustamiAAoon

[Allāh] said, "No. Go both of you with Our signs; indeed, We are with you, listening.

فَأْتِيَا فِرْعَوْنَ فَقُولَآ إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

Fa/tiya firAAawna faqoola innarasoolu rabbi alAAalameen

Go to Pharaoh and say, 'We are the messengers¹ of the Lord of the worlds,

أَنْ أَرْسِلْ مَعَنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

An arsil maAAana banee isra-eel

[Commanded to say], "Send with us the Children of Israel."'"

قَالَ أَلَمْ نُرَبِّكَ فِينَا وَلِيدًا وَلَبِثْتَ فِينَا مِنْ عُمُرِكَ سِنِينَ

Qala alam nurabbika feenawaleedan walabithta feena min AAumurika sineen

[Pharaoh] said, "Did we not raise you among us as a child, and you remained among us for years of your life?

وَفَعَلْتَ فَعْلَتَكَ ٱلَّتِى فَعَلْتَ وَأَنتَ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

WafaAAalta faAAlataka allatee faAAaltawaanta mina alkafireen

And [then] you did your deed which you did,¹ and you were of the ungrateful."

قَالَ فَعَلْتُهَآ إِذًا وَأَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

Qala faAAaltuha ithanwaana mina addalleen

[Moses] said, "I did it, then, while I was of those astray [i.e., ignorant].

فَفَرَرْتُ مِنكُمْ لَمَّا خِفْتُكُمْ فَوَهَبَ لِى رَبِّى حُكْمًا وَجَعَلَنِى مِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

Fafarartu minkum lamma khiftukumfawahaba lee rabbee hukman wajaAAalanee mina almursaleen

So I fled from you when I feared you. Then my Lord granted me judgement [i.e., wisdom and prophet hood] and appointed me [as one] of the messengers.

وَتِلْكَ نِعْمَةٌ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَىَّ أَنْ عَبَّدتَّ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

Watilka niAAmatun tamunnuha AAalayyaan AAabbadta banee isra-eel

And is this a favor of which you remind me - that you have enslaved the Children of Israel?"

قَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَا رَبُّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

Qala firAAawnu wama rabbu alAAalameen

Said Pharaoh, "And what is the Lord of the worlds?"

قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِينَ

Qala rabbu assamawatiwal-ardi wama baynahuma in kuntummooqineen

[Moses] said, "The Lord of the heavens and earth and that between them, if you should be convinced."

قَالَ لِمَنْ حَوْلَهُۥٓ أَلَا تَسْتَمِعُونَ

Qala liman hawlahu alatastamiAAoon

[Pharaoh] said to those around him, "Do you not hear?"

قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

Qala rabbukum warabbu aba-ikumual-awwaleen

[Moses] said, "Your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers."

قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ ٱلَّذِىٓ أُرْسِلَ إِلَيْكُمْ لَمَجْنُونٌ

Qala inna rasoolakumu allatheeorsila ilaykum lamajnoon

[Pharaoh] said,¹ "Indeed, your 'messenger' who has been sent to you is mad."

قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلْمَشْرِقِ وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ

Qala rabbu almashriqi walmaghribiwama baynahuma in kuntum taAAqiloon

[Moses] said, "Lord of the east and the west and that between them, if you were to reason."

قَالَ لَئِنِ ٱتَّخَذْتَ إِلَـٰهًا غَيْرِى لَأَجْعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمَسْجُونِينَ

Qala la-ini ittakhathta ilahanghayree laajAAalannaka mina almasjooneen

[Pharaoh] said, "If you take a god other than me, I will surely place you among those imprisoned."

قَالَ أَوَلَوْ جِئْتُكَ بِشَىْءٍ مُّبِينٍ

Qala awa law ji/tuka bishay-in mubeen

[Moses] said, "Even if I brought you something [i.e., proof] manifest?"

قَالَ فَأْتِ بِهِۦٓ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

Qala fa/ti bihi in kunta mina assadiqeen

[Pharaoh] said, "Then bring it, if you should be of the truthful."

فَأَلْقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِىَ ثُعْبَانٌ مُّبِينٌ

Faalqa AAasahu fa-ithahiya thuAAbanun mubeen

So [Moses] threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent manifest.¹

وَنَزَعَ يَدَهُۥ فَإِذَا هِىَ بَيْضَآءُ لِلنَّـٰظِرِينَ

WanazaAAa yadahu fa-itha hiya baydaolinnathireen

And he drew out his hand; thereupon it was white for the observers.

قَالَ لِلْمَلَإِ حَوْلَهُۥٓ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ عَلِيمٌ

Qala lilmala-i hawlahu inna hathalasahirun AAaleem

[Pharaoh] said to the eminent ones around him, "Indeed, this is a learned magician.

يُرِيدُ أَن يُخْرِجَكُم مِّنْ أَرْضِكُم بِسِحْرِهِۦ فَمَاذَا تَأْمُرُونَ

Yureedu an yukhrijakum min ardikumbisihrihi famatha ta/muroon

He wants to drive you out of your land by his magic, so what do you advise?"

قَالُوٓا۟ أَرْجِهْ وَأَخَاهُ وَٱبْعَثْ فِى ٱلْمَدَآئِنِ حَـٰشِرِينَ

Qaloo arjih waakhahu wabAAathfee almada-ini hashireen

They said, "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers

يَأْتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَحَّارٍ عَلِيمٍ

Ya/tooka bikulli sahharin AAaleem

Who will bring you every learned, skilled magician."

فَجُمِعَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ لِمِيقَـٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ

FajumiAAa assaharatu limeeqatiyawmin maAAloom

So the magicians were assembled for the appointment of a well-known day.¹

وَقِيلَ لِلنَّاسِ هَلْ أَنتُم مُّجْتَمِعُونَ

Waqeela linnasi hal antummujtamiAAoon

And it was said to the people, "Will you congregate.

لَعَلَّنَا نَتَّبِعُ ٱلسَّحَرَةَ إِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبِينَ

LaAAallana nattabiAAu assaharatain kanoo humu alghalibeen

That we might follow the magicians if they are the predominant?"

فَلَمَّا جَآءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ قَالُوا۟ لِفِرْعَوْنَ أَئِنَّ لَنَا لَأَجْرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحْنُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبِينَ

Falamma jaa assaharatuqaloo lifirAAawna a-inna lana laajran in kunnanahnu alghalibeen

And when the magicians arrived, they said to Pharaoh, "Is there indeed for us a reward if we are the predominant?"

قَالَ نَعَمْ وَإِنَّكُمْ إِذًا لَّمِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ

Qala naAAam wa-innakum ithanlamina almuqarrabeen

He said, "Yes, and indeed, you will then be of those near [to me]."

قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰٓ أَلْقُوا۟ مَآ أَنتُم مُّلْقُونَ

Qala lahum moosa alqoo maantum mulqoon

Moses said to them, "Throw whatever you will throw."

فَأَلْقَوْا۟ حِبَالَهُمْ وَعِصِيَّهُمْ وَقَالُوا۟ بِعِزَّةِ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّا لَنَحْنُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَ

Faalqaw hibalahum waAAisiyyahumwaqaloo biAAizzati firAAawna inna lanahnualghaliboon

So they threw their ropes and their staffs and said, "By the might of Pharaoh, indeed it is we who are predominant."

فَأَلْقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِىَ تَلْقَفُ مَا يَأْفِكُونَ

Faalqa moosa AAasahufa-itha hiya talqafu ma ya/fikoon

Then Moses threw his staff, and at once it devoured what they falsified.

فَأُلْقِىَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَـٰجِدِينَ

Faolqiya assaharatu sajideen

So the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allāh].

قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

Qaloo amanna birabbialAAalameen

They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds,

رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ

Rabbi moosa waharoon

The Lord of Moses and Aaron."

قَالَ ءَامَنتُمْ لَهُۥ قَبْلَ أَنْ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكَبِيرُكُمُ ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱلسِّحْرَ فَلَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ ۚ لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَيْدِيَكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُم مِّنْ خِلَـٰفٍ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

Qala amantum lahu qabla an athanalakum innahu lakabeerukumu allathee AAallamakumu assihrafalasawfa taAAlamoona laoqattiAAanna aydiyakum waarjulakummin khilafin walaosallibannakum ajmaAAeen

[Pharaoh] said, "You believed him [i.e., Moses] before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic, but you are going to know. I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you all."

قَالُوا۟ لَا ضَيْرَ ۖ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ

Qaloo la dayra innaila rabbina munqaliboon

They said, "No harm. Indeed, to our Lord we will return.

إِنَّا نَطْمَعُ أَن يَغْفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَـٰيَـٰنَآ أَن كُنَّآ أَوَّلَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Inna natmaAAu an yaghfira lanarabbuna khatayana an kunnaawwala almu/mineen

Indeed, we aspire that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we were the first of the believers."

۞ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنْ أَسْرِ بِعِبَادِىٓ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ

Waawhayna ila moosaan asri biAAibadee innakum muttabaAAoon

And We inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants; indeed, you will be pursued."

فَأَرْسَلَ فِرْعَوْنُ فِى ٱلْمَدَآئِنِ حَـٰشِرِينَ

Faarsala firAAawnu fee almada-ini hashireen

Then Pharaoh sent among the cities gatherers¹

إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَشِرْذِمَةٌ قَلِيلُونَ

Inna haola-i lashirthimatunqaleeloon

[And said], "Indeed, those are but a small band,

وَإِنَّهُمْ لَنَا لَغَآئِظُونَ

Wa-innahum lana lagha-ithoon

And indeed, they are enraging us,

وَإِنَّا لَجَمِيعٌ حَـٰذِرُونَ

Wa-inna lajameeAAun hathiroon

And indeed, we are a cautious society..."

فَأَخْرَجْنَـٰهُم مِّن جَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ

Faakhrajnahum min jannatinwaAAuyoon

So We removed them from gardens and springs

وَكُنُوزٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ

Wakunoozin wamaqamin kareem

And treasures and honorable station¹ -

كَذَٰلِكَ وَأَوْرَثْنَـٰهَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

Kathalika waawrathnahabanee isra-eel

Thus. And We caused to inherit it the Children of Israel.

فَأَتْبَعُوهُم مُّشْرِقِينَ

FaatbaAAoohum mushriqeen

So they pursued them at sunrise.

فَلَمَّا تَرَٰٓءَا ٱلْجَمْعَانِ قَالَ أَصْحَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّا لَمُدْرَكُونَ

Falamma taraa aljamAAaniqala as-habu moosa innalamudrakoon

And when the two companies saw one another, the companions of Moses said, "Indeed, we are to be overtaken!"

قَالَ كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّ مَعِىَ رَبِّى سَيَهْدِينِ

Qala kalla inna maAAiya rabbeesayahdeen

[Moses] said, "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me."

فَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنِ ٱضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلْبَحْرَ ۖ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرْقٍ كَٱلطَّوْدِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

Faawhayna ila moosaani idrib biAAasaka albahra fanfalaqafakana kullu firqin kattawdi alAAatheem

Then We inspired to Moses, "Strike with your staff the sea," and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain.

وَأَزْلَفْنَا ثَمَّ ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ

Waazlafna thamma al-akhareen

And We advanced thereto the others [i.e., the pursuers].

وَأَنجَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥٓ أَجْمَعِينَ

Waanjayna moosa waman maAAahuajmaAAeen

And We saved Moses and those with him, all together.

ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ

Thumma aghraqna al-akhareen

Then We drowned the others.

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Inna fee thalika laayatan wamakana aktharuhum mu/mineen

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

وَٱتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

Watlu AAalayhim nabaa ibraheem

And recite to them the news of Abraham,

إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِۦ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ

Ith qala li-abeehi waqawmihi mataAAbudoon

When he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?"

قَالُوا۟ نَعْبُدُ أَصْنَامًا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَـٰكِفِينَ

Qaloo naAAbudu asnamanfanathallu laha AAakifeen

They said, "We worship idols and remain to them devoted."

قَالَ هَلْ يَسْمَعُونَكُمْ إِذْ تَدْعُونَ

Qala hal yasmaAAoonakum ithtadAAoon

He said, "Do they hear you when you supplicate?

أَوْ يَنفَعُونَكُمْ أَوْ يَضُرُّونَ

Aw yanfaAAoonakum aw yadurroon

Or do they benefit you, or do they harm?"

قَالُوا۟ بَلْ وَجَدْنَآ ءَابَآءَنَا كَذَٰلِكَ يَفْعَلُونَ

Qaloo bal wajadna abaanakathalika yafAAaloon

They said, "But we found our fathers doing thus."

قَالَ أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا كُنتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ

Qala afaraaytum ma kuntumtaAAbudoon

He said, "Then do you see what you have been worshipping,

أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُمُ ٱلْأَقْدَمُونَ

Antum waabaokumu al-aqdamoon

You and your ancient forefathers?

فَإِنَّهُمْ عَدُوٌّ لِّىٓ إِلَّا رَبَّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

Fa-innahum AAaduwwun lee illa rabbaalAAalameen

Indeed, they are enemies to me, except the Lord of the worlds,¹

ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَنِى فَهُوَ يَهْدِينِ

Allathee khalaqanee fahuwa yahdeen

Who created me, and He [it is who] guides me.

وَٱلَّذِى هُوَ يُطْعِمُنِى وَيَسْقِينِ

Wallathee huwa yutAAimuneewayasqeen

And it is He who feeds me and gives me drink.

وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ

Wa-itha maridtu fahuwayashfeen

And when I am ill, it is He who cures me

وَٱلَّذِى يُمِيتُنِى ثُمَّ يُحْيِينِ

Wallathee yumeetunee thummayuhyeen

And who will cause me to die and then bring me to life

وَٱلَّذِىٓ أَطْمَعُ أَن يَغْفِرَ لِى خَطِيٓـَٔتِى يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ

Wallathee atmaAAu anyaghfira lee khatee-atee yawma addeen

And who I aspire that He will forgive me my sin on the Day of Recompense."

رَبِّ هَبْ لِى حُكْمًا وَأَلْحِقْنِى بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

Rabbi hab lee hukman waalhiqneebissaliheen

[And he said], "My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous.

وَٱجْعَل لِّى لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

WajAAal lee lisana sidqinfee al-akhireen

And grant me a mention [i.e., reputation] of honor among later generations.

وَٱجْعَلْنِى مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

WajAAalnee min warathati jannati annaAAeem

And place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Pleasure.

وَٱغْفِرْ لِأَبِىٓ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

Waghfir li-abee innahu kanamina addalleen

And forgive my father. Indeed, he has been of those astray.

وَلَا تُخْزِنِى يَوْمَ يُبْعَثُونَ

Wala tukhzinee yawma yubAAathoon

And do not disgrace me on the Day they are [all] resurrected -

يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ مَالٌ وَلَا بَنُونَ

Yawma la yanfaAAu malun walabanoon

The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children

إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ

Illa man ata Allahabiqalbin saleem

But only one who comes to Allāh with a sound heart."

وَأُزْلِفَتِ ٱلْجَنَّةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

Waozlifati aljannatu lilmuttaqeen

And Paradise will be brought near [that Day] to the righteous.

وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلْجَحِيمُ لِلْغَاوِينَ

Waburrizati aljaheemu lilghaween

And Hellfire will be brought forth for the deviators,

وَقِيلَ لَهُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ

Waqeela lahum ayna ma kuntumtaAAbudoon

And it will be said to them, "Where are those you used to worship

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ هَلْ يَنصُرُونَكُمْ أَوْ يَنتَصِرُونَ

Min dooni Allahi hal yansuroonakumaw yantasiroon

Other than Allāh? Can they help you or help themselves?"

فَكُبْكِبُوا۟ فِيهَا هُمْ وَٱلْغَاوُۥنَ

Fakubkiboo feeha hum walghawoon

So they will be overturned into it [i.e., Hellfire], they and the deviators

وَجُنُودُ إِبْلِيسَ أَجْمَعُونَ

Wajunoodu ibleesa ajmaAAoon

And the soldiers of Iblees, all together.

قَالُوا۟ وَهُمْ فِيهَا يَخْتَصِمُونَ

Qaloo wahum feeha yakhtasimoon

They will say while they dispute therein,

تَٱللَّهِ إِن كُنَّا لَفِى ضَلَـٰلٍ مُّبِينٍ

Tallahi in kunna lafeedalalin mubeen

"By Allāh, we were indeed in manifest error

إِذْ نُسَوِّيكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

Ith nusawweekum birabbi alAAalameen

When we equated you with the Lord of the worlds.

وَمَآ أَضَلَّنَآ إِلَّا ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ

Wama adallana illaalmujrimoon

And no one misguided us except the criminals.

100

فَمَا لَنَا مِن شَـٰفِعِينَ

Fama lana min shafiAAeen

So now we have no intercessors

101

وَلَا صَدِيقٍ حَمِيمٍ

Wala sadeeqin hameem

And not a devoted friend.

102

فَلَوْ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةً فَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Falaw anna lana karratan fanakoonamina almu/mineen

Then if we only had a return [to the world] and could be of the believers..."¹

103

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Inna fee thalika laayatan wamakana aktharuhum mu/mineen

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

104

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

105

كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

Kaththabat qawmu noohinalmursaleen

The people of Noah denied the messengers¹

106

إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ نُوحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

Ith qala lahum akhoohum noohunala tattaqoon

When their brother Noah said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh?

107

إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ

Innee lakum rasoolun ameen

Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

108

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

Fattaqoo Allaha waateeAAoon

So fear Allāh and obey me.

109

وَمَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

Wama as-alukum AAalayhi min ajrin inajriya illa AAala rabbi alAAalameen

And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

110

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

Fattaqoo Allaha waateeAAoon

So fear Allāh and obey me."

111

۞ قَالُوٓا۟ أَنُؤْمِنُ لَكَ وَٱتَّبَعَكَ ٱلْأَرْذَلُونَ

Qaloo anu/minu laka wattabaAAakaal-arthaloon

They said, "Should we believe you while you are followed by the lowest [class of people]?"

112

قَالَ وَمَا عِلْمِى بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

Qala wama AAilmee bimakanoo yaAAmaloon

He said, "And what is my knowledge of what they used to do?

113

إِنْ حِسَابُهُمْ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّى ۖ لَوْ تَشْعُرُونَ

In hisabuhum illa AAalarabbee law tashAAuroon

Their account is only upon my Lord, if you [could] perceive.

114

وَمَآ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Wama ana bitaridialmu/mineen

And I am not one to drive away the believers.

115

إِنْ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ

In ana illa natheerunmubeen

I am only a clear warner."

116

قَالُوا۟ لَئِن لَّمْ تَنتَهِ يَـٰنُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْمَرْجُومِينَ

Qaloo la-in lam tantahi yanoohu latakoonanna mina almarjoomeen

They said, "If you do not desist, O Noah, you will surely be of those who are stoned."

117

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوْمِى كَذَّبُونِ

Qala rabbi inna qawmee kaththaboon

He said, "My Lord, indeed my people have denied me.

118

فَٱفْتَحْ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَهُمْ فَتْحًا وَنَجِّنِى وَمَن مَّعِىَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Faftah baynee wabaynahum fathanwanajjinee waman maAAiya mina almu/mineen

Then judge between me and them with decisive judgement and save me and those with me of the believers."

119

فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِى ٱلْفُلْكِ ٱلْمَشْحُونِ

Faanjaynahu waman maAAahu feealfulki almashhoon

So We saved him and those with him in the laden ship.

120

ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا بَعْدُ ٱلْبَاقِينَ

Thumma aghraqna baAAdu albaqeen

Then We drowned thereafter the remaining ones.

121

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Inna fee thalika laayatan wamakana aktharuhum mu/mineen

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

122

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

123

كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

Kaththabat AAadun almursaleen

ʿAad denied the messengers

124

إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ هُودٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

Ith qala lahum akhoohumhoodun ala tattaqoon

When their brother Hūd said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh?

125

إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ

Innee lakum rasoolun ameen

Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

126

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

Fattaqoo Allaha waateeAAoon

So fear Allāh and obey me.

127

وَمَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

Wama as-alukum AAalayhi min ajrin inajriya illa AAala rabbi alAAalameen

And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

128

أَتَبْنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِيعٍ ءَايَةً تَعْبَثُونَ

Atabnoona bikulli reeAAin ayatantaAAbathoon

Do you construct on every elevation a sign,¹ amusing yourselves,

129

وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَخْلُدُونَ

Watattakhithoona masaniAAalaAAallakum takhludoon

And take for yourselves constructions [i.e., palaces and fortresses] that you might abide eternally?

130

وَإِذَا بَطَشْتُم بَطَشْتُمْ جَبَّارِينَ

Wa-itha batashtum batashtumjabbareen

And when you strike, you strike as tyrants.

131

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

Fattaqoo Allaha waateeAAoon

So fear Allāh and obey me.

132

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَمَدَّكُم بِمَا تَعْلَمُونَ

Wattaqoo allathee amaddakumbima taAAlamoon

And fear He who provided you with that which you know,

133

أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنْعَـٰمٍ وَبَنِينَ

Amaddakum bi-anAAamin wabaneen

Provided you with grazing livestock and children

134

وَجَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ

Wajannatin waAAuyoon

And gardens and springs.

135

إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ

Innee akhafu AAalaykum AAathabayawmin AAatheem

Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day."

136

قَالُوا۟ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيْنَآ أَوَعَظْتَ أَمْ لَمْ تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْوَٰعِظِينَ

Qaloo sawaon AAalaynaawaAAathta am lam takun mina alwaAAitheen

They said, "It is all the same to us whether you advise or are not of the advisors.

137

إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

In hatha illa khuluqual-awwaleen

This is not but the custom of the former peoples,

138

وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ

Wama nahnu bimuAAaththabeen

And we are not to be punished."

139

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهْلَكْنَـٰهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Fakaththaboohu faahlaknahuminna fee thalika laayatan wama kanaaktharuhum mu/mineen

And they denied him, so We destroyed them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

140

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

141

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

Kaththabat thamoodu almursaleen

Thamūd denied the messengers

142

إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ صَـٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

Ith qala lahum akhoohum salihunala tattaqoon

When their brother Ṣāliḥ said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh?

143

إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ

Innee lakum rasoolun ameen

Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

144

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

Fattaqoo Allaha waateeAAoon

So fear Allāh and obey me.

145

وَمَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

Wama as-alukum AAalayhi min ajrin inajriya illa AAala rabbi alAAalameen

And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

146

أَتُتْرَكُونَ فِى مَا هَـٰهُنَآ ءَامِنِينَ

Atutrakoona fee ma hahunaamineen

Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death],

147

فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ

Fee jannatin waAAuyoon

Within gardens and springs

148

وَزُرُوعٍ وَنَخْلٍ طَلْعُهَا هَضِيمٌ

WazurooAAin wanakhlin talAAuhahadeem

And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit?

149

وَتَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا فَـٰرِهِينَ

Watanhitoona mina aljibalibuyootan fariheen

And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill.

150

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

Fattaqoo Allaha waateeAAoon

So fear Allāh and obey me.

151

وَلَا تُطِيعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ

Wala tuteeAAoo amraalmusrifeen

And do not obey the order of the transgressors,

152

ٱلَّذِينَ يُفْسِدُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا يُصْلِحُونَ

Allatheena yufsidoona fee al-ardiwala yuslihoon

Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend."

153

قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَحَّرِينَ

Qaloo innama anta mina almusahhareen

They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.

154

مَآ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُنَا فَأْتِ بِـَٔايَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

Ma anta illa basharun mithlunafa/ti bi-ayatin in kunta mina assadiqeena

You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful."

155

قَالَ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةٌ لَّهَا شِرْبٌ وَلَكُمْ شِرْبُ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ

Qala hathihi naqatunlaha shirbun walakum shirbu yawmin maAAloom

He said, "This is a she-camel.¹ For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day.

156

وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوٓءٍ فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ

Wala tamassooha bisoo-infaya/khuthakum AAathabu yawmin AAatheem

And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day."

157

فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ نَـٰدِمِينَ

FaAAaqarooha faasbahoonadimeen

But they hamstrung her and so became regretful.

158

فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Faakhathahumu alAAathabu innafee thalika laayatan wama kanaaktharuhum mu/mineen

And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

159

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

160

كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

Kaththabat qawmu lootinalmursaleen

The people of Lot denied the messengers

161

إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

Ith qala lahum akhoohum lootunala tattaqoon

When their brother Lot said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh?

162

إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ

Innee lakum rasoolun ameen

Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

163

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

Fattaqoo Allaha waateeAAoon

So fear Allāh and obey me.

164

وَمَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

Wama as-alukum AAalayhi min ajrin inajriya illa AAala rabbi alAAalameen

And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

165

أَتَأْتُونَ ٱلذُّكْرَانَ مِنَ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

Ata/toona aththukranamina alAAalameen

Do you approach males among the worlds¹

166

وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمْ رَبُّكُم مِّنْ أَزْوَٰجِكُم ۚ بَلْ أَنتُمْ قَوْمٌ عَادُونَ

Watatharoona ma khalaqa lakumrabbukum min azwajikum bal antum qawmun AAadoon

And leave what your Lord has created for you as mates? But you are a people transgressing."

167

قَالُوا۟ لَئِن لَّمْ تَنتَهِ يَـٰلُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْمُخْرَجِينَ

Qaloo la-in lam tantahi yalootu latakoonanna mina almukhrajeen

They said, "If you do not desist, O Lot, you will surely be of those evicted."

168

قَالَ إِنِّى لِعَمَلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلْقَالِينَ

Qala innee liAAamalikum mina alqaleen

He said, "Indeed, I am, toward your deed, of those who detest [it].

169

رَبِّ نَجِّنِى وَأَهْلِى مِمَّا يَعْمَلُونَ

Rabbi najjinee waahlee mimmayaAAmaloon

My Lord, save me and my family from [the consequence of] what they do."

170

فَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ أَجْمَعِينَ

Fanajjaynahu waahlahu ajmaAAeen

So We saved him and his family, all,

171

إِلَّا عَجُوزًا فِى ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ

Illa AAajoozan fee alghabireen

Except an old woman¹ among those who remained behind.

172

ثُمَّ دَمَّرْنَا ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ

Thumma dammarna al-akhareen

Then We destroyed the others.

173

وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِم مَّطَرًا ۖ فَسَآءَ مَطَرُ ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ

Waamtarna AAalayhim mataranfasaa mataru almunthareen

And We rained upon them a rain [of stones], and evil was the rain of those who were warned.

174

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Inna fee thalika laayatan wamakana aktharuhum mu/mineen

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

175

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

176

كَذَّبَ أَصْحَـٰبُ لْـَٔيْكَةِ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

Kaththaba as-habual-aykati almursaleen

The companions of the thicket [i.e., the people of Madyan] denied the messengers

177

إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ شُعَيْبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

Ith qala lahum shuAAaybun alatattaqoon

When Shuʿayb said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh?

178

إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ

Innee lakum rasoolun ameen

Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

179

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ

Fattaqoo Allaha waateeAAoon

So fear Allāh and obey me.

180

وَمَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

Wama as-alukum AAalayhi min ajrin inajriya illa AAala rabbi alAAalameen

And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

181

۞ أَوْفُوا۟ ٱلْكَيْلَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْمُخْسِرِينَ

Awfoo alkayla wala takoonoo minaalmukhsireen

Give full measure and do not be of those who cause loss.

182

وَزِنُوا۟ بِٱلْقِسْطَاسِ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمِ

Wazinoo bilqistasialmustaqeem

And weigh with an even [i.e., honest] balance.

183

وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشْيَآءَهُمْ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ

Wala tabkhasoo annasaashyaahum wala taAAthaw fee al-ardimufsideen

And do not deprive people of their due and do not commit abuse on earth, spreading corruption.

184

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُمْ وَٱلْجِبِلَّةَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

Wattaqoo allathee khalaqakumwaljibillata al-awwaleen

And fear He who created you and the former creation."¹

185

قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَحَّرِينَ

Qaloo innama anta mina almusahhareen

They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.

186

وَمَآ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ

Wama anta illa basharunmithluna wa-in nathunnuka lamina alkathibeen

You are but a man like ourselves, and indeed, we think you are among the liars.

187

فَأَسْقِطْ عَلَيْنَا كِسَفًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

Faasqit AAalayna kisafan minaassama-i in kunta mina assadiqeen

So cause to fall upon us fragments of the sky, if you should be of the truthful."

188

قَالَ رَبِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ

Qala rabbee aAAlamu bimataAAmaloon

He said, "My Lord is most knowing of what you do."

189

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمِ ٱلظُّلَّةِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ

Fakaththaboohu faakhathahumAAathabu yawmi aththullati innahu kanaAAathaba yawmin AAatheem

And they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the black cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a terrible day.

190

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

Inna fee thalika laayatan wamakana aktharuhum mu/mineen

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

191

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

192

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِيلُ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

Wa-innahu latanzeelu rabbi alAAalameen

And indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds.

193

نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوحُ ٱلْأَمِينُ

Nazala bihi arroohu al-ameen

The Trustworthy Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] has brought it down

194

عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنذِرِينَ

AAala qalbika litakoona mina almunthireen

Upon your heart, [O Muḥammad] - that you may be of the warners -

195

بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِىٍّ مُّبِينٍ

Bilisanin AAarabiyyin mubeen

In a clear Arabic language.

196

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِى زُبُرِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

Wa-innahu lafee zuburi al-awwaleen

And indeed, it is [mentioned] in the scriptures of former peoples.

197

أَوَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُمْ ءَايَةً أَن يَعْلَمَهُۥ عُلَمَـٰٓؤُا۟ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

Awa lam yakun lahum ayatan anyaAAlamahu AAulamao banee isra-eel

And has it not been a sign to them that it is recognized by the scholars of the Children of Israel?

198

وَلَوْ نَزَّلْنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ بَعْضِ ٱلْأَعْجَمِينَ

Walaw nazzalnahu AAala baAAdial-aAAjameen

And even if We had revealed it to one among the foreigners¹

199

فَقَرَأَهُۥ عَلَيْهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ مُؤْمِنِينَ

Faqaraahu AAalayhim ma kanoobihi mu/mineen

And he had recited it to them [perfectly],¹ they would [still] not have been believers in it.

200

كَذَٰلِكَ سَلَكْنَـٰهُ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

Kathalika salaknahu feequloobi almujrimeen

Thus have We inserted it [i.e., disbelief] into the hearts of the criminals.

201

لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ يَرَوُا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَلِيمَ

La yu/minoona bihi hattayarawoo alAAathaba al-aleem

They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment.

202

فَيَأْتِيَهُم بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ

Faya/tiyahum baghtatan wahum layashAAuroon

And it will come to them suddenly while they perceive [it] not.

203

فَيَقُولُوا۟ هَلْ نَحْنُ مُنظَرُونَ

Fayaqooloo hal nahnu muntharoon

And they will say, "May we be reprieved?"

204

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ

AfabiAAathabina yastaAAjiloon

So for Our punishment are they impatient?

205

أَفَرَءَيْتَ إِن مَّتَّعْنَـٰهُمْ سِنِينَ

Afaraayta in mattaAAnahum sineen

Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years

206

ثُمَّ جَآءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ

Thumma jaahum ma kanooyooAAadoon

And then there came to them that which they were promised?

207

مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يُمَتَّعُونَ

Ma aghna AAanhum ma kanooyumattaAAoon

They would not be availed by the enjoyment with which they were provided.

208

وَمَآ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ

Wama ahlakna min qaryatin illalaha munthiroon

And We did not destroy any city except that it had warners

209

ذِكْرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِينَ

Thikra wama kunnathalimeen

As a reminder; and never have We been unjust.

210

وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتْ بِهِ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينُ

Wama tanazzalat bihi ashshayateen

And the devils have not brought it [i.e., the revelation] down.¹

211

وَمَا يَنۢبَغِى لَهُمْ وَمَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ

Wama yanbaghee lahum wamayastateeAAoon

It is not allowable for them, nor would they be able.

212

إِنَّهُمْ عَنِ ٱلسَّمْعِ لَمَعْزُولُونَ

Innahum AAani assamAAilamaAAzooloona

Indeed they, from [its] hearing, are removed.¹

213

فَلَا تَدْعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُعَذَّبِينَ

Fala tadAAu maAAa Allahi ilahanakhara fatakoona mina almuAAaththabeen

So do not invoke¹ with Allāh another deity and [thus] be among the punished.

214

وَأَنذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ ٱلْأَقْرَبِينَ

Waanthir AAasheerataka al-aqrabeen

And warn, [O Muḥammad], your closest kindred.

215

وَٱخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Wakhfid janahakalimani ittabaAAaka mina almu/mineen

And lower your wing [i.e., show kindness] to those who follow you of the believers.

216

فَإِنْ عَصَوْكَ فَقُلْ إِنِّى بَرِىٓءٌ مِّمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ

Fa-in AAasawka faqul innee baree-onmimma taAAmaloon

And if they disobey you, then say, "Indeed, I am disassociated from what you are doing."

217

وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Watawakkal AAala alAAazeezi arraheem

And rely upon the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,

218

ٱلَّذِى يَرَىٰكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ

Allathee yaraka heenataqoom

Who sees you when you arise¹

219

وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِى ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ

Wataqallubaka fee assajideen

And your movement among those who prostrate.¹

220

إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ

Innahu huwa assameeAAu alAAaleem

Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

221

هَلْ أُنَبِّئُكُمْ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينُ

Hal onabbi-okum AAala man tanazzaluashshayateen

Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?

222

تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِيمٍ

Tanazzalu AAala kulli affakinatheem

They descend upon every sinful liar.

223

يُلْقُونَ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ كَـٰذِبُونَ

Yulqoona assamAAa waaktharuhum kathiboon

They pass on what is heard,¹ and most of them are liars.

224

وَٱلشُّعَرَآءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلْغَاوُۥنَ

WashshuAAaraoyattabiAAuhumu alghawoon

And the poets - [only] the deviators follow them;

225

أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّهُمْ فِى كُلِّ وَادٍ يَهِيمُونَ

Alam tara annahum fee kulli wadinyaheemoon

Do you not see that in every valley they roam¹

226

وَأَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفْعَلُونَ

Waannahum yaqooloona ma layafAAaloon

And that they say what they do not do? -

227

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَذَكَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرًا وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ ۗ وَسَيَعْلَمُ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوٓا۟ أَىَّ مُنقَلَبٍ يَنقَلِبُونَ

Illa allatheena amanoowaAAamiloo assalihati wathakaroo Allahakatheeran wantasaroo min baAAdi ma thulimoowasayaAAlamu allatheena thalamoo ayyamunqalabin yanqaliboon

Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allāh often and defend [the Muslims]¹ after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned.
